Soft, Water-Soluble Colour That Moves With You

The Derwent Watercolour Pencil in Sepia gives artists and illustrators the precision of a pencil with the fluid beauty of watercolour - all in one versatile tool.

A 3.5mm water-soluble core delivers rich, highly pigmented colour whether used dry for detailed sketching or blended with water to create luminous washes and subtle colour flows. The warm, earthy Sepia tone is a natural choice for portraits, landscapes, and tonal studies. Because the pigment is not permanent once wetted, you can re-wet dry passages and continue refining your work - a genuine advantage for artists who build up layers gradually.

The hexagonal Californian incense cedar barrel provides a comfortable, controlled grip for detailed work and sharpens cleanly without splitting. Softer than Inktense, the Watercolour range excels at understated, painterly effects and blends beautifully with other water-soluble media in mixed-media projects.

This box of six pencils suits art students, hobbyists, and working illustrators who want a reliable supply of a single key colour on hand. Derwent Watercolour pencils are a trusted staple in studios and classrooms across Australia.

  • Soft 3.5mm water-soluble pigment strip for smooth blending and layering
  • Highly pigmented Sepia tone with strong light fastness and colour purity
  • Use dry for controlled drawing or wet to create fluid watercolour washes
  • Colour is re-wettable once dry, allowing ongoing reworking of passages
  • Hexagonal Californian incense cedar barrel for comfortable grip and clean sharpening
  • Ideal for subtle, tonal work - less intense than Inktense for a painterly finish
  • Tonal sketching and portraiture using dry pencil techniques
  • Watercolour wash painting and mixed-media illustration
  • Art classroom and studio use where a reliable supply of a single colour is needed
  • Layering and blending work in sketchbooks and on watercolour paper
  • Detailed botanical or landscape studies requiring fine, controlled marks

FAQs

Yes. The Derwent Watercolour Pencil works perfectly dry as a conventional coloured pencil, giving fine, controlled marks. Add water with a brush to activate the pigment and create soft washes. The soft 3.5mm core blends easily even when used dry.
Inktense pencils produce vivid, ink-like colour that becomes permanent once dry, making it impossible to re-wet. Watercolour pencils are softer in tone, re-wettable even after drying, and better suited to subtle, painterly effects and traditional watercolour techniques.
The box contains 6 individual Derwent Watercolour Pencils, all in the Sepia (colour reference 53) shade. This is a single-colour box, useful for keeping a generous supply of a key working tone without purchasing a full multi-colour set.
Watercolour paper with a cold-press or hot-press finish gives the best results when using water. For dry drawing, any smooth cartridge or drawing paper works well. Heavier paper (at least 200gsm) is recommended when applying wet washes to avoid buckling.
Yes. The Derwent Watercolour range is widely used in both art education and professional studios. The approachable price point and easy handling make them a practical choice for students, while the high pigment quality and light fastness satisfy more experienced artists.
