Rich Grass Green Colour That Flows Like Watercolour Paint

The Derwent Watercolour Pencil in Grass Green gives artists precise drawing control with the fluid, luminous beauty of watercolour - all in a single pencil.

Colour No. 47 Grass Green lays down smoothly with a soft, 3.5mm water-soluble strip encased in Californian incense cedar wood. Use it dry for crisp line work, or activate it with water to release flowing washes of colour. Because watercolour pigment is re-wettable once dry, you can return to a passage, lift colour, and blend further - a quality that suits careful, deliberate work.

The hexagonal barrel reduces hand fatigue during longer sessions and provides a firm grip for detailed mark-making. Highly pigmented for strong colour purity and reliable lightfastness, these pencils layer and blend readily whether used alone or alongside other media.

Suited to illustrators, art students, and adult colouring enthusiasts who value control and subtlety over intensity. This box of 6 keeps a favourite colour ready to hand for studio or classroom use.

  • Colour No. 47 Grass Green - soft, highly pigmented water-soluble core for rich, true colour
  • 3.5mm water-soluble strip activates with water for smooth washes or blends when used dry
  • Re-wettable once dry, allowing colour to be lifted, moved, and reworked
  • Hexagonal Californian incense cedar barrel for comfortable grip and precise control
  • Lightfast pigments deliver strong colour purity that resists fading over time
  • Compatible with mixed media workflows - layer with other watercolour pencils or media
  • Watercolour illustration and botanical art requiring subtle, controlled washes
  • Art school and TAFE studio projects involving wet and dry media techniques
  • Adult colouring books and detailed hand-rendered artwork
  • Mixed media sketchbooks combining pencil line work with watercolour passages
  • Restocking a favourite colour in an existing Derwent Watercolour pencil collection

FAQs

Yes. The Derwent Watercolour Pencil works fully dry, producing soft, blendable marks similar to a quality coloured pencil. The water-soluble core becomes fluid and painterly only when you introduce a wet brush, so both techniques are completely valid.
Once a watercolour wash has dried on the paper, you can wet it again with a damp brush to reactivate the pigment. This lets you soften edges, lift colour, or blend across areas you have already painted - useful for gradual, layered work.
Inktense pigment becomes permanent once dry and produces much more vibrant, ink-like colour. The Watercolour Pencil delivers softer, more traditional watercolour tones and remains re-wettable after drying, making it better suited to subtle, painterly work.
The box contains 6 Derwent Watercolour Pencils all in Colour No. 47 Grass Green. Buying a box of one colour is a practical way to restock a heavily used shade without purchasing a full set.
Yes. The Californian incense cedar barrel sharpens cleanly with a standard pencil sharpener, and the water-soluble core is less prone to crumbling than some softer pastel-type pencils. A sharp point is recommended for fine detail work before wetting.
