Soft Watercolour Colour That Flows from Pencil to Paint

The Derwent Watercolour Pencil in Imperial Purple gives you the precision of a pencil and the luminous depth of watercolour - all in one elegant tool.

Watercolour pencils sit in a unique middle ground between drawing and painting. The 3.5mm water-soluble strip inside each hexagonal cedar-wood barrel delivers rich, highly pigmented colour that can be used completely dry for detailed work, or activated with a wet brush to create smooth, flowing washes. Imperial Purple (shade 23) produces subtle, sophisticated tones that suit botanical illustration, fine art journalling, and mixed-media projects equally well. The soft texture blends and layers effortlessly, letting you build depth without fighting the medium.

Unlike permanent ink pencils such as Derwent Inktense, Watercolour colour remains re-wettable once dry, so you can revisit and rework areas without starting over. This flexibility makes the range a practical choice for students and practising artists alike who want more control over their final result.

This box of six pencils is a cost-effective way to stock up on a single signature colour - useful for illustrators, art teachers, or any creative professional who works with Imperial Purple regularly. Shop confidently with Mega Office Supplies, your trusted Australian art and office supplies source.

FAQs

Yes. The Derwent Watercolour Pencil works perfectly dry, functioning like a conventional coloured pencil with a soft, smooth texture that is easy to blend and layer. Adding water with a brush transforms the pigment into a fluid watercolour wash.
Inktense pencils use an ink-based formulation that becomes permanent once dry, producing intense, bright hues. Watercolour pencils deliver softer, more traditional watercolour tones and remain re-wettable after drying, so you can continue to blend and adjust the colour.
You receive a box of 6 Derwent Watercolour Pencils, all in the Imperial Purple (shade 23) colour. No other colours or accessories are included.
Yes. The hexagonal barrel gives students good grip and control, and the cedar-wood casing sharpens cleanly. The range is widely used in secondary school and TAFE art programmes across Australia.
Yes. Unlike permanent ink pencils, Derwent Watercolour pigment can be re-wetted after drying, allowing you to soften edges, blend areas, or lift colour even after the initial wash has set.
