Derwent Watercolour Pencil Deep Vermilion Box of 6

Yes. Derwent Watercolour Pencils work fully dry, giving you precise linework and the ability to layer and blend colours in the traditional coloured-pencil style. Activating the core with water simply unlocks a second mode - flowing washes and painterly blends.

The key difference is permanence. Inktense pigment becomes permanent once dry, so washes cannot be reworked. Watercolour pencils remain water-soluble even after drying, allowing you to rewet an area and move the colour again. Watercolour pencils also produce softer, more subtle tones compared with the vivid intensity of Inktense.

The box contains six Derwent Watercolour Pencils, all in the same colour - Deep Vermilion (colour reference 14). It is designed for artists who go through a single colour quickly or want studio backup stock of a frequently used shade.

Cold-press or rough watercolour paper with at least 190gsm weight gives the best results when working wet, as it holds the water without warping. For dry use only, standard cartridge or mixed-media paper works well. Hot-press paper suits detailed dry work where smooth line quality is a priority.

Derwent Watercolour Pencils are widely used in secondary school and college art programmes. They are straightforward to use and the dual wet-dry capability makes them versatile for curriculum projects. For younger primary-age children, a supervised setting is recommended when water is involved.
