Whiteboard surfaces compared

Every complaint about a whiteboard is the same complaint: it won't wipe clean any more. That is almost never the marker's fault and almost always the surface's. Four surfaces are sold, they behave completely differently, and the price gap between them is entirely explained by how long they stay usable.

The short answer. Match the surface to how often it gets used, not to the budget. Occasional use — melamine. Every second day — painted steel or acrylic. Daily, all day, or a classroom — porcelain or glass. Buying melamine for a classroom is the single most common and most expensive mistake in this category.

A naming note that saves confusion in catalogues: porcelain, ceramic and vitreous enamel are the same thing under different trade names. If a board is described as any of those, it is the fused-enamel-on-steel construction.

Ghosting — what it is and why it happens

Ghosting is the faint permanent shadow of old writing that survives erasing. The cause is porosity. Melamine is microporous, so every write-and-erase cycle pushes a little more pigment down into the surface. It is cumulative and irreversible — a melamine board that wipes perfectly in month one will ghost by month twelve, and no cleaner brings it back.

Porcelain and glass are non-porous. The ink sits on top and comes off completely, and it keeps doing that for decades rather than months. That, in one paragraph, is the entire price difference between the categories.

One habit that causes ghosting on any surface

Erasing while the ink is still wet drives pigment into the surface instead of lifting it off. Give dry-erase ink three to five seconds to dry before wiping. It is the single cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of a board you already own.

Matching the surface to the use

Melamine — occasional and personal

Home offices, study rooms, a board that gets written on once a week. It is the cheapest option and appropriate for exactly that. The warranty position tells the story: in the Australian market melamine frequently carries no surface warranty at all, and where a warranty exists it tends to top out around five years. Manufacturers know the coating breaks down.

Painted or acrylic steel — every second day

The general office middle ground: a chemically bonded acrylic or lacquered surface on a steel backing, magnetic because of the steel. Suppliers describe it as suited to “low to moderate usage in home or general office applications”, and typical warranties land in the 8 to 10 year band. Good value where a board is used regularly but not constantly.

Porcelain — daily, all day, and every classroom

Ceramic enamel fused to steel at around 800°C, which makes the writing surface effectively glass. It will not stain, ghost, scratch or dent under normal use. This is the correct specification for schools, universities, conference centres, medical facilities and government offices — anywhere a board is in use all day, every day. Australian warranties are typically 25 years; some overseas brands warrant 50 years or for life.

Glass — daily use where the room matters

Toughened safety glass, non-porous and immune to ghosting, and the best-looking option in a renovated space. Standard float glass carries a faint green cast from its iron content; low-iron or “ultra-clear” glass is water-clear and worth specifying where colour accuracy or a pure white matters.

The magnetic trap on glass boards

Glass is not a magnetic material. Magnetic glassboards work by bonding a thin steel sheet behind the glass, so the magnetic field has to reach through four to six millimetres of glass to grab it.

Standard whiteboard magnets will not hold on a glassboard. You need rare-earth (neodymium) magnets. And both magnetic and non-magnetic glassboards are sold — so check which one you're buying, because a non-magnetic glassboard will never hold a magnet no matter how strong.

This is the most common source of disappointment with glassboards, and it is entirely avoidable at the point of order.

What actually ruins a whiteboard

  • Abrasive cleaners. The number one cause of irreversible damage. Manufacturers are blunt about this — household abrasives and scouring products physically scratch the surface, and scratches are permanent on every surface type.
  • Ammonia-based cleaners. Common household glass cleaner yellows the surface and leaves a film.
  • Wax or oil-based cleaners. Leave a residue that makes erasing progressively worse.
  • Paper towel and abrasive cloths. Use a soft microfibre cloth or a proper foam eraser.
  • Bare hands on the writing surface. Skin oils build up and interfere with erasing.

Permanent marker is usually not permanent

The classic panic is generally fixable. Write over the permanent marks with a dry-erase marker and erase immediately — the dry-erase solvent lifts the permanent ink. If marks persist, isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth in small circles, then wipe with clean water and dry.

The exception is melamine, where permanent ink can genuinely penetrate the porous coating. On porcelain and glass, removal is reliable.

The buying rule, in one line

Frequency of use decides the surface; budget decides the size. If a board will be written on daily, buying melamine to save money means buying it twice — and living with a ghosted, unprofessional-looking surface in between. If it will be used once a week, porcelain is money spent on durability you will never consume.
