Quick-Setting Drafting Compass With Extension Bar

Staedtler 552 02 is the Mars comfort quick-setting compass, packed in a case with a hinged lid together with its lead part, an extension bar, a universal adapter and a spares box.

Setting the radius happens in two stages. Squeezing the large push-buttons frees the mechanism so the legs can be opened or closed in one movement, and the centre wheel then trims the setting. Staedtler describe the push-button action as sturdy and easy to use, and say the wheel gives precise adjustment.

Both legs are hinged. Bending the lead leg and the needle leg until they stand parallel lets the point and lead meet the paper squarely, which Staedtler say makes particularly large radii easier to draw exactly. The lead part has a 4 mm shank and is interchangeable, as is the needle, and the universal adapter holds common writing and drafting instruments, so a fineliner or technical pen can take the place of the lead for inked work.

The compass is 170 mm long. Staedtler give different maximum circle sizes on their Australian website and in their 2024 catalogue, so the figures are set out in the FAQ rather than quoted here.

FAQs

Staedtler's Australian website says approximately 360 mm, or 600 mm with the extension bar. Their 2024 Australian catalogue says approximately 350 mm, or 585 mm with the bar. Because the two sources disagree we do not quote a single figure.
It holds another instrument in place of the lead part. Staedtler say it suits all common writing and drafting instruments, and their photo shows a pigment liner clamped in it for inked circles.
They are the same Mars comfort compass with universal adapter and spares box in a case. The 552 02 adds the extension bar for circles beyond the reach of the legs alone.
With the legs hinged so the needle and lead stand upright, the point does not skid and the lead wears evenly. Staedtler say this parallel position helps when drawing particularly large radii.
Staedtler's photo of the spares shows leads, a spare needle and a small blue box with a cap. They do not publish the lead grade or the number of pieces, so we cannot list them.
It is a full-size 170 mm drafting compass. For first circle-drawing exercises Staedtler offer the Noris 550 50 and 550 60, which have a blunt safety needle.
