Deep Graphite Tone With The 6B Lumograph

Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-6B is a box of 12 very soft drawing pencils for laying down dark shadow areas with little effort.

6B opens the dark end of the Lumograph scale. It is a natural choice for night scenes, heavy cast shadows, dense backgrounds and expressive charcoal-style sketches done in pencil, and it pairs well with an HB or 2H used for the underdrawing.

At this softness Staedtler increase the lead to approximately 3.6 mm, the size used from 6B through 11B, giving the graphite more body at the tip. Staedtler point to graphite that moves smoothly between tones, carries a faint metallic sheen and resists breaking.

Expect the point to round off quickly; that broad tip is useful for fast coverage. Made in Germany, according to Staedtler, who recommend the 511 001 tub sharpener and the Mars plastic 526 50 eraser.

FAQs

A Staedtler box containing 12 Mars Lumograph pencils, all 6B.
Staedtler step the lead up with softness. 6B to 11B use roughly 3.6 mm, while 3B to 5B use about 2.5 mm, so the softer graphite is better supported.
The barrel is a standard Lumograph pencil. Staedtler recommend their 511 001 tub sharpener or the 510 10 for this range.
Soft graphite smears easily, so many artists use a fixative spray or store finished work under a cover sheet.
