10B For Heavy Darks And Fast Blocking In

Staedtler Mars Lumograph 100-10B is a box of 12 very soft drawing pencils, the grade artists reach for when a drawing needs large areas of deep tone laid down quickly.

Mars Lumograph runs across 24 degrees from 12B to 10H. 10B is near the soft end, a step darker than 9B, with a lead Staedtler give as approx. 3.6 mm. That thick, soft core covers background areas, cast shadows and gestural life drawing without endless layering, and the blunt point is easy to use on its side.

Staedtler point to graphite graded in fine steps, a slight metallic sheen on the page, good resistance to breaking and strokes that repeat evenly from pencil to pencil. Each blue barrel is printed Made in Germany. Thick soft leads need a sharp blade: the Staedtler pick is their 511 001 tub, with the 510 10 metal model as the alternative, and the Mars plastic 526 50 for erasing.

A Staedtler box of 12 Mars Lumograph pencils, all in 10B.
No. Staedtler also make 11B and 12B, which are softer again. 10B is the third softest of the 24 grades.
The barrel is a standard Lumograph size, but the approx. 3.6 mm lead is soft, so use a fresh blade and light pressure. Staedtler name their 511 001 tub and 510 10 metal models.
Very soft graphite moves easily under the hand. Rest your hand on a scrap sheet and fix finished drawings if they will be handled.
