$2.80, poles printed on it, and too big to swallow

A painted ferrite bar magnet, 50 x 15 x 10mm, with red and blue poles stamped N and S.

This is the magnet to buy for young children, and the reason is size. Everything else in the magnetism range carries an under-8 ingestion warning; a 50mm painted block does not, because it will not go anywhere. That makes it the one a prep teacher can actually put on a table.

The printed N and S are doing real teaching work. A child holding two blocks discovers that red-to-blue pulls and red-to-red pushes, and the letters give them the vocabulary at the same moment they feel the force. No worksheet required.

Ferrite has high coercive strength, which in practice means it stays magnetised through years of being dropped, banged together and left in a tub with everything else.

  • 50mm x 15mm x 10mm painted bar magnet
  • Red and blue poles stamped N and S
  • Big enough that it is not an ingestion risk, unlike the small magnets
  • Ferrite - high coercive strength, resists demagnetising
  • $2.80 each, so a class set is affordable
  • Introducing poles, attraction and repulsion
  • Magnetic and non-magnetic sorting tests
  • Early years science tables
  • Whole-class hands-on experiments
  • Compass and field-line demonstrations

FAQs

It carries no under-8 warning, unlike the small magnets in this range, and at 50 x 15 x 10mm it is not an ingestion risk. That makes it the sensible choice for early years. Supervise as you would any science resource.
They give a child the words at the moment they feel the force. Red-to-blue pulls, red-to-red pushes - and the letters mean they can describe what happened rather than just say it stuck.
Durability. Ferrite resists demagnetisation, so it survives being dropped and knocked about in a classroom tub. A stronger neodymium magnet is also a much bigger safety problem in a school.
The supplier does not publish a pull figure. It has a large magnetic surface area and is designed for demonstrating attraction and repulsion rather than lifting - the giant horseshoe lifts 1.8kg if that is what you need.
One per pair of students at minimum - discovering repulsion needs two magnets. At $2.80 each, a set of fifteen covers a class working in pairs.
