HMD OffGrid Satellite Communicator Neon Black

Yes. HMD states messaging, check-ins, location tracking and SOS need the HMD OffGrid app and an active plan. HMD offers HMD Unlimited and HMD Freedom, each with a minimum subscription period of 12 months and a one-time activation fee.

HMD states satellite coverage is available in select areas of North America, Canada, Europe and Australia/New Zealand. HMD also notes that certain regions restrict or prohibit satellite communication devices, so check local rules before you travel.

HMD says the tag puts you on their radar even with no smartphone connected, and that you press and hold the SOS button to request urgent assistance. Text messages and live tracking go through the phone paired with the HMD OffGrid app.

HMD lists a 140 character limit for texts on HMD Unlimited. HMD Freedom allows up to 350 messages, which HMD bases on an average message size of 50 bytes.

HMD rates it at 3 days, measured under controlled indoor conditions with no satellite network connection, so field use with frequent satellite messages may differ. It charges by USB Type-C.

HMD states IP68 weather sealing and certification to MIL-STD-810H durability.
