A work surface that teaches while it protects the desk

Reusable silicone. Guided modelling techniques. First Nations symbols. $15.00.

Most clay mats are just a mat. This one has the foundational techniques printed on it - the coil, the pinch, the slab, the join - so a student working alone has the method in front of them instead of waiting for the teacher to come round again. That is the difference between one demonstration reaching thirty students and reaching six.

Silicone is the right material for clay. Clay does not stick to it, it wipes clean, and it does not soften and tear the way a plastic sheet does after a term of being scraped with a modelling tool.

The First Nations symbols are by Jo Wilson, a contemporary Aboriginal artist and a proud descendant of the Ngemba people of Brewarrina in north-western New South Wales. Zart credits her by name, which is the right way to do it - the symbols are her work, not generic clip art, and the mat gives students a reason to look at Australian First Nations art as part of a making lesson rather than as a separate topic.

It suits every level. A beginner follows the techniques; a confident student uses it as a clean, non-stick surface and ignores the guide.

$15.00 and reusable for years, which is cheaper over time than the boards it replaces.

Three things Zart does not publish

The size. Not one dimension anywhere. For a desk mat that is the first thing anyone asks.

The thickness. A thin silicone mat curls at the edges; a thick one stays flat.

Whether it is oven safe. Silicone usually is, and polymer clay usually gets baked - but Zart does not say, and we are not going to tell you to put it in a school oven on an assumption. Do not bake on it until we hear back. We have asked all three.

  • Silicone, so clay does not stick and it wipes clean
  • Foundational modelling techniques printed on the mat
  • First Nations symbols by Ngemba artist Jo Wilson, credited by name
  • Reusable for years - cheaper over time than boards
  • NO SIZE, THICKNESS OR OVEN RATING published. See the note
  • Clay and air-dry clay technique lessons
  • Plasticine, dough and modelling compound work
  • A non-stick, wipe-clean work surface
  • First Nations art and symbol study alongside making
  • Independent and relief-taught modelling sessions

FAQs

The foundational techniques are printed on it - coil, pinch, slab, join. A student working alone has the method in front of them instead of waiting for the teacher to come round again.
Zart does not publish a single dimension, which for a desk mat is the first thing anyone asks. We have asked and we will put it on this page when we get it.
We do not know and we are not going to guess. Silicone usually is oven safe and polymer clay usually gets baked, but Zart does not state it. Do not put it in a school oven until we confirm.
Jo Wilson - a First Nations woman, contemporary Aboriginal artist and a proud descendant of the Ngemba people of Brewarrina in north-western NSW. Zart credits her by name, which is how it should be.
No, and that is the reason for silicone. It wipes clean and it does not soften and tear the way a plastic sheet does after a term of being scraped with a modelling tool.
