Traditional Pine Solvent for Oil Painters

Winsor and Newton English Distilled Turpentine is a pine-derived solvent for thinning oil colour and cleaning brushes. The 75ml bottle suits individual artists, school art rooms and studio kits.

Winsor and Newton describes distilled turpentine as the most traditional solvent in its range and its strongest thinner. Oil painters use it to reduce the viscosity of colour, to improve flow and dispersion, and to mix their own painting mediums. It is listed for use with Winsor and Newton Artists' Oil Colour, Griffin Alkyd Fast Drying Oil Colour and Winton Oil Colour, so it fits the materials many students and practising artists already use.

Beyond thinning, the solvent removes dried oil, alkyd and acrylic colour from brushes and painting tools, which helps keep good brushes in working order. It also removes varnishes, including Dammar Varnish, before an artwork is re-varnished. The compact 75ml size keeps a small, manageable quantity on hand for occasional or classroom use.

Winsor and Newton rates this as its most hazardous thinner, so keep it away from heat, sparks and open flames and out of reach of children. Pair it with Winsor and Newton art materials, artists oil paints, paint brushes and other art supplies.

Use it with care. Winsor and Newton labels it with the signal word Danger and describes it as its strongest and most hazardous thinner: it is flammable and harmful if swallowed, inhaled or in contact with skin. Keep it away from heat and open flames, out of reach of children, and read the safety data sheet Winsor and Newton publishes. The manufacturer suggests checking whether a less aggressive solvent would suit your needs.
Yes. Winsor and Newton states it removes varnishes, including Dammar Varnish, before an artwork is re-varnished. Test on a small area first if you are unsure how a varnish layer will respond.
Do not use it. Winsor and Newton advises against using turpentine that has thickened, so replace it with a fresh bottle.
Winsor and Newton advises disposing of the contents and container at a hazardous or special waste collection point in line with local regulations. Check with your local council for the nearest drop-off point.
