The Softest Mars Carbon Grade For 2 mm Holders

This listing is one tray of twelve 4B Mars carbon leads from Staedtler (200-4B), each roughly 2 mm in diameter and 130 mm long.

4B is the soft end of the Mars carbon scale. It builds deep blacks and broad tone quickly, so artists reach for it when blocking in shadows, working large on cartridge paper or roughing out a composition before refining it with a harder lead.

In a 2 mm clutch holder the lead can be left long for side shading or pointed for a firmer edge. Staedtler list the range for paper and drawing card, in seven degrees running from 4B up to 4H. Staedtler also say the leads are German made.

Soft graphite wears quickly and transfers to a hand resting on the page. Work left to right if you are right-handed, use a sheet of scrap paper as a guard and keep a spare tray nearby for longer sessions.
