A rectangle has no cut-out, so it is not shaped around a particular desk. That makes it the flexible choice for a hot desk, a bench or a workstation you may reconfigure, and you can turn it whichever way suits. A keyhole mat covers more of the floor directly under a desk with a pedestal.

Floortex's own guidance is the clearest answer. They recommend PVC chair mats for light or occasional use and for home offices, and they call polycarbonate the most durable chair mat in their range, saying it will not curl, crack, discolour, dent, smell or buckle under normal use. So PVC for a home office or a desk used now and then, polycarbonate for a workstation in daily use.

Measure the pile depth before you order, which is what Floortex advise. For their PVC mats they publish low pile as 1/4″ or less and standard pile as 3/8″ or less, which are 6.35mm and 9.5mm. A mat on carpet deeper than its band will not roll properly. Tell us your pile depth and we will point you at the right one.

Floortex fit their carpet mats with rounded grippers on the underside, which they say keep the mat in place and stop it from sliding. On a carpet inside the pile range above that is what holds it. If your carpet is deeper than the band Floortex publish, the grippers have less to bite into, so measure the pile first.

Floortex do not publish a thickness for this code, so we do not state one. If thickness matters for a doorway clearance or a threshold, ask us and we will request the figure from Floortex before you order.
