Painterly Colour Control in Every Stroke

The Derwent Academy Watercolour Pencil in Ultramarine delivers the precision of a drawing pencil with the soft, blendable beauty of watercolour - all in a convenient box of 6.

Watercolour pencils sit in a class of their own for artists and students who want to move between dry sketching and wet painting without switching tools. The 3.5mm water-soluble strip is housed in a hexagonal Californian incense cedar barrel, making it easy to grip, sharpen, and control for detailed work. Ultramarine is a richly pigmented shade that delivers strong colour purity and reliable light fastness across washes and layered strokes.

Use them dry for fine line work and hatching, then add water with a brush to open up soft washes and blended gradients. Unlike permanent ink-based pencils, the colour remains re-wettable once dry, so you can go back in and rework areas to refine your composition without starting over.

A practical choice for secondary school art classes, university studios, and working artists who prefer a more restrained, traditional watercolour palette. Six pencils in the box ensures you always have a backup on hand.

  • 3.5mm soft, water-soluble pigment strip for smooth wet and dry performance
  • Hexagonal Californian incense cedar barrel for easy grip, control, and sharpening
  • Highly pigmented Ultramarine colour with strong light fastness for lasting artwork
  • Re-wettable once dry - rework and refine washes without damaging the paper
  • Suitable for layering, blending, and mixed media applications
  • Box of 6 pencils keeps your supply stocked for class or studio use
  • Secondary school and university fine art classes
  • Illustration and botanical drawing with watercolour washes
  • Mixed media sketchbook work combining pencil line and paint
  • Landscape and portrait studies requiring subtle, blendable colour
  • Studio practice for artists transitioning between dry and wet media

FAQs

Yes. The Derwent Academy Watercolour Pencils work perfectly dry for sketching, hatching, and detailed line work. The soft 3.5mm core blends and layers easily even without adding water, making them versatile for mixed media or standalone drawing.
Applying water with a brush dissolves the pigment and creates smooth, flowing washes similar to traditional watercolour paint. The colour spreads and blends across the paper surface. Once dry, the colour can be re-wetted and moved again, which allows for corrections and reworking.
The key difference is permanence. Inktense pencils become permanent once dry and produce brighter, more saturated results. Watercolour pencils stay re-wettable after drying, deliver softer, more traditional watercolour tones, and are better suited to artists who prefer a subtle, painterly finish.
Watercolour paper or a heavier cartridge paper (at least 200gsm) gives the best results when using these pencils wet. Lightweight paper can buckle when wet. For dry use only, standard sketching paper works fine.
This listing includes 6 Ultramarine Watercolour Pencils. Derwent Academy Watercolour Pencils are also available as individual pencils and in larger tin sets, giving you flexibility to build your palette or replace a single colour as needed.
