Mid-Size Gesso With a Fine-Grit Tooth

Jo Sonja Gesso White in a 500ml jar is labelled Fine-Grit Finish with Maximum Tooth and gives a steady studio supply of white primer.

The newer Jo Sonja label on this jar is unusually detailed. It says the gesso is suitable for fine or decorative art, can be used as a primer for most surfaces such as wood, canvas and metal, may be thinned with Flow Medium and cleans up with mild soap and cool water. The label also prints pigment PW.6. A second photo shows the gesso being rolled onto board.

A 500ml jar is the practical middle size for painters who prime regularly but do not need a litre. The directions advise applying subsequent coats as soon as previous coats are dry, so having enough on hand for several coats over a few boards is useful.

Prime boards from classroom canvas boards or surfaces from art paper and canvas, add painting mediums such as Flow Medium for thinning, and choose wide brushes in craft paint brushes.

FAQs

One 500ml jar of Jo Sonja Gesso White, code JS71445. The roller in the second photo is not included.
It says to use the gesso as a primer for most surfaces, giving wood, canvas and metal as examples. The rest of that line is cut off in our photo.
The directions say to apply with a clean brush, roller or airbrush, thinning with Flow Medium starting at a ratio of 1:1 until the right viscosity is reached.
The label says do not mix with oil-based products. It does not say more than that, so read the full directions before planning oil work over it.
The newer label simply reads Gesso, with pigment PW.6 printed below. The white colour comes from the product listing and the jar contents.
