Paynes Grey ink for cool shadows and storm skies

Chroma Atelier Paynes Grey is a cool, slate blue-grey acrylic ink in a 60ml bottle, a quieter alternative to black for tonal work.

The label prints the name as PAYNES GREY, without an apostrophe, under a silver band and above the Atelier logo and Artists' Pigmented Inks wording. In the bottle it looks nearly black with a blue cast. Brushed out in our swatch it turns into a cool slate blue-grey, darker in the streaks where the brush reloaded. The label gives 60ml and 2 US fl oz.

Painters favour this kind of grey because it keeps a cool blue undertone instead of going flat and dead. Lay it in for storm clouds, distant hills, wet streets and shadows on white objects, or work an entire monochrome study in it before adding colour.
