Adapters are not symmetrical, and nothing on the connectors says so. Plenty of adapters convert one way and not the other, and the connectors alone will not tell you, so check the stated direction against your source and display before ordering. Passive adapters carry resolution limits that active ones do not, and long runs may need a booster rather than a longer cable. See display adapters, extenders and converters and AV cables.
