Timber sits between plastic and steel. It will not shatter, it does not slide about the way light plastic does, and the edge softens with years of use rather than snapping. What varies most is the marking: some carry metric on one edge and imperial on the other, which is either useful or confusing depending on the classroom. Check the scale before ordering a set.
