Ink type is the practical difference. Ballpoint is forgiving, survives being left uncapped and writes on rough or recycled stock without feathering. Gel lays a darker, smoother line and takes longer to dry, which shows under a left hand or on a page turned quickly. Choose by the paper and the writer rather than the barrel.
