A visual diary is the working book art and design courses ask students to keep: sketching, annotation, pasted-in samples and drafting all in the one place, so the thinking behind a finished piece stays visible. A3 is the format most secondary and tertiary courses set, and it takes a full A4 sheet pasted in with room to write around it.
