The common failure in a classroom is applying too much, because the water in the adhesive swells the fibres and light paper dries with a ripple through it. A thin even coat from the edges inward avoids it. Clear-drying formulas matter where the glue line shows; washable grades matter everywhere else. Tacky grades hold on a vertical surface.
