The seal is the point. Gummed paper tape penetrates the board and becomes part of it, so tampering shows and the carton holds under weight that peels a plastic tape. It also goes into paper recycling with the box. The trade-off is the dispenser, which is a machine rather than a hand tool and needs water and maintenance.
