School Compass With Universal Adapter For A Pencil Or Pen

Staedtler 550 60 is the Noris school compass supplied with a lead part, a universal adapter and a lead box, all in a case with a hinged lid.

The universal adapter is the difference from the plain 550 50. With it a student can swap the lead for a pencil, coloured pencil or pen and draw circles in whatever they are already using, which helps with colour work and with students who struggle to keep a thin lead sharp. Staedtler's catalogue index calls this version the school compass with hinged leg, and the photo shows the joint on the lead leg where the adapter fits.

Everything else follows the Noris school pattern: an obtuse-angled safety needle, a length of 124 mm and a maximum circle diameter of approximately 300 mm. The case has a ruler printed along it.

FAQs

It lets the compass hold a pencil or pen instead of its own lead, so circles can be drawn in colour or in ink.
Both are the same Noris school compass with a safety needle. The 550 60 adds the universal adapter and a lead part; the 550 50 has a lead box only.
Staedtler fit an obtuse-angled safety needle, blunter than a drafting needle. It still has a point, so supervision for young children is wise.
Staedtler's catalogue index names the 550 60 the school compass with hinged leg. The joint is visible part-way down the lead leg in the photos; Staedtler do not publish more detail about it.
Up to approximately 300 mm diameter, per Staedtler. For bigger work look at the Noris 550 01 or the Mars comfort range.
