Staedtler's Lumocolor permanent glasochrom 108 20-9 is a waterproof, wood-cased marking pencil in black, supplied as a box of 12 black pencils, for opaque marking on most surfaces, even dark or transparent ones.

Staedtler files the glasochrom under dry markers rather than pencils, and on the 108 20-9 the distinction is the whole point: the lead is soft and pigmented, so it lays down an opaque black line on paper, plastic, metal, glass, wood, leather and stone where graphite leaves nothing readable. Staedtler names the use as labelling objects in industry and trade. The black mark is waterproof and, in Staedtler's own words, not water soluble, so it stays put through washdowns, weather and handling.

Black is the colour a laboratory or a machine shop tends to run as its default, and it is the article number Staedtler itself uses as the worked example in its catalogue. The 108 20-9 barrel is a wood-cased pencil that you sharpen: Staedtler recommends its own 510 25 two hole sharpener or its 512 002 cuvette sharpener. When a black mark has to come off, it is removed with a cloth dampened with methylated spirits, and water on its own will not shift it. Staedtler also publishes that the pencil does not bleed through paper, does not dry out and is odourless.

Staedtler publishes the 108 20-9 for opaque marking on most surfaces, even dark or transparent ones, and names paper, plastic, metal, glass, wood, leather and stone. Its own dry marker range page also lists film, card and glass or porcelain, but that is a statement about the whole dry marker family rather than about this article, so we do not publish them here. If a particular surface decides the order, ask us and we will put the question to Staedtler.
Sharpened. Staedtler's 2024 catalogue calls the 108 20 a Wood-cased pencil, and its own data sheet says it is easy to sharpen with a quality sharpener, recommending the 512 002 cuvette sharpener or the 510 25 two hole sharpener. There is no string to pull and no paper to unwind on this pencil. The hexagonal barrel wording belongs to the non-permanent omnichrom 108, not to this article.
Water will not. Staedtler states plainly that the glasochrom mark is not water soluble. To lift a black mark, use a cloth dampened with methylated spirits, which is the method Staedtler itself publishes for this range.
Staedtler describes the omnichrom as the water soluble version of the same idea, so it can be wiped off many smooth surfaces and corrected. The 108 20-9 on this page is the permanent, waterproof one. Staedtler prints the two side by side in its catalogue, so take the omnichrom when a mark has to change and the glasochrom when it has to stay.
Twelve pencils, all black, under Staedtler article 108 20-9. The final digit is the colour: 0 white, 1 yellow, 2 red, 3 blue, 5 green and 9 black, all sharing the 108 20 base code. Ordering the wrong final digit gets you the wrong colour rather than a different pencil.
For the 108 20-9 there is no box weight, no carton quantity, no country of origin against the article and no barrel profile. One dealer channel states a round barrel and 175 by 7.6 millimetres where Staedtler's own data sheet says 176 by 7, so we publish Staedtler's figures and no barrel profile at all.
