The Pilot Custom 823 is a vacuum-filling fountain pen with a 14K gold broad nib, made in Japan for people who write a great deal and want to refill rarely.

The Custom 823 fills straight from the bottle through a plunger vacuum system: unscrew the blind cap, draw the rod up, dip the nib and push down in one stroke. Ink is pulled directly into the barrel, which Pilot rates at around 1.5 ml, several times what a cartridge holds. The smoky transparent amber resin barrel lets you see how much is left at a glance. The nib is Pilot's large size 15 in 14K gold, engraved and tuned for a broad point that lays a bold, wet line that shows off shading inks and suits large, expressive handwriting.

Gold gives the nib a softness that steel cannot match, and the broad point rewards a relaxed hand. The screw cap seals the nib between sessions and posts securely for balance. It arrives in a presentation box with a bottle of Pilot INK-70 ink, so it is ready to fill and write on the day it is opened.

No. It is a vacuum filler and takes bottled ink only. Any bottled fountain pen ink works, including the Pilot INK-70 bottle supplied in the box and the Pilot Iroshizuku range.
Unscrew the blind cap at the end of the barrel and pull the plunger rod all the way up. Dip the nib fully into the ink and push the rod down in one smooth stroke. The vacuum pulls ink straight into the barrel. Wipe the nib and screw the blind cap back down.
Pilot nibs run a little finer than European equivalents, so this broad writes close to a Western medium-to-broad. It lays a wet line that shows off shading inks.
The 823 is a translucent resin pen with a vacuum filler and a 14K gold nib, built for ink capacity. The Custom 845 is an ebonite pen finished in urushi lacquer with an 18K gold nib, filled by cartridge or converter. Both use the same large size 15 nib.
