They are two separate parts. The toner cartridge holds the powder that forms the image; the drum unit is the photosensitive cylinder that carries it to the paper. A laser printer needs both, and they wear out at different rates - the drum typically lasts several toner cartridges.

Faded, patchy or light print generally means the toner is low. Marks, bands, lines or ghosting that repeat at the same interval on every page generally mean the drum. Your printer also tracks drum life separately and will display a drum warning when it is due.

It is the basis Brother measures drum life on. The drum cycles once per job regardless of length, so single-page jobs use up drum life fastest. Printing longer documents will usually take you past the approximately 12,000 pages Brother quotes.

Brother Australia no longer publishes a compatibility list for this drum, because the printers it serves have been removed from its website. We would rather confirm the fit against your printer model than publish a list we cannot source. Send us your model and we will check.

Not usually. The drum outlasts several toner cartridges, so they come due on different cycles. Replace whichever the printer asks for - there is no need to change both together.
