Twelve student thermometers at $3.60 each - but read the temperature limit first

12 thermometers, -40 to +50 degrees C, roughly 15cm long. Glass tube on a PVC backing. Mercury free. Ages 6+.

The limit is 50 degrees C. These cannot go in boiling water, or in hot water from a kettle, or in a beaker over a bunsen. The supplier says so plainly and so do we, because a pack of twelve broken thermometers is an expensive lesson. If your class is heating anything, buy the red spirit lab thermometers instead, which read to 110.

What these are for is everything below body temperature: the room, outside the window, a glass of water in the fridge, ice melting, the difference between the shade and the sun. That is most of primary science and a good deal of early secondary.

The plastic backing is what makes them work with young children. It is a flat card with the glass tube fixed along it, so the thing has a shape, it does not roll, a child can hold it without pinching a bare tube, and it can be left standing in a beaker or stuck to a window and forgotten about.

Twelve is the number that changes the lesson. One thermometer is a demonstration; twelve is every pair of students taking their own reading and finding out that measurements disagree - which is the actual lesson.

FAQs

No. The maximum is 50 degrees C. Hot tap water is often above that and boiling water is double it. For anything heated, use the red spirit lab thermometers that read to 110.
Both, and the distinction matters. The thermometer itself is a glass tube; it is mounted on a flat PVC backing. So it is tougher and easier to hold than a bare glass thermometer, but it is not unbreakable.
The supplier says 6 and over. The backing is what makes that reasonable - there is no loose glass tube to grip.
Yes, that is the point of the backing. Stand one in a glass of water in the fridge and read it in an hour without having to hold anything.
For a class of thirty working in pairs, twelve covers most of the room and leaves a couple spare for breakages. Two packs is comfortable.
