The standard book box, carrying DJ Mate's marine spirit animals

170mm wide, 250mm deep, 280mm at the back sloping to 170mm at the front. Sturdy laminated cardboard. Packs of five.

Structurally this is the same box as the plain Book Box - the largest of the cardboard range, sized for textbooks, folders and a term of student work. What is different is the artwork.

The painting is by DJ Mate. In the supplier's words: "We would like to show our respect and acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, of elders past and present and we respectfully tell their stories as painted by DJ Mate." Australia's Indigenous people make no distinction between land and sea, and the fine white dots around the box represent safe passage between the animals.

The five spirit animals, as the supplier describes them: the Dolphin, associated with the human spirit and a reminder to approach life with humour and joy; the Sea Turtle - Wudanyuka in Yanyuwa - renowned for its long distance oceanic migrations; the Dugong or Sea Cow, whose largest population in the world is at the Great Barrier Reef; the Whale, Mugga Mugga, a sacred spiritual totem to many coastal Aboriginal people including the Woppaburra People of the Keppel Islands; and a baby whale swimming above its mother as she offers protection from predators below.

Five boxes, $4 a box - the same price as the plain Book Box. It works as ordinary storage; it just does that job while saying something.

FAQs

DJ Mate. The supplier credits the artist and states the stories are told respectfully; they do not publish the artist's nation or the commissioning arrangement, and we are not going to fill those in on their behalf. Ask us and we will put the question to them.
The supplier describes them as the safe passage around the box, connecting the animals - reflecting that Australia's Indigenous people make no distinction between land and sea.
Same dimensions, same material, same price - 170 x 250 x 280mm, five for $20. Only the printed artwork differs.
No - it is sold in packs of five, like the rest of the cardboard box range.
A standard A4 two-ring binder is about 320 x 260 x 50mm. It stands up in the 250mm depth with the top proud of the 280mm back. Lever arch files are too tall.
