Two things decide protection and neither is comfort. Filter class has to match the hazard, since a particulate filter does nothing about organic vapour. And the seal has to be genuine, which means fit testing and a clean-shaven contact area, because a rated mask leaking around the edge is filtering the air that goes past it.
