The nasopharyngeal airway has a unique rectangular flange design, which means the device sits comfortably for the patient and there is no need for a safety pin. The one piece design is made from a transparent material, which enables blockages to be easily and quickly identified. Nasopharyngeal airways may work well for patients who are clenching their jaw, which would make inserting an oral airway particularly difficult. A nasopharyngeal airway is also helpful for patients who are semi-conscious and need frequent nasal-tracheal suctioning.
